Severe flooding is threatening to shut down Hat Yai, the commercial centre of the lower South, as days of heavy downpours have deluged areas close to downtown.

The flooding in Songkhla's Hat Yai district and other areas has subsided and the emergency status has been lifted.

Songkhla - Thirty-five schools in three districts of Songkhla were closed Monday after most areas of the districts were inundated. The schools in Hat Yai, Klong Hoi Khong and Bang Klam districts were closed after rivers overflew the banks and flooded the areas.

HAT YAI , Nov 22 (TNA) -- Passenger train services from Hat Yai to Padang Baesar district bordering Malaysia resumed early Sunday but tens of thousands of villagers in Thailand’s South have left their homes for higher ground as flooding continued to ravage the region causing authorities to declare a number of areas as disaster zones.

The Thai Chamber of Commerce looks likely to be jinxed again this year due to protest threats scaring off the prime minister from presiding at its annual convention.

All related agencies are still monitoring the flood situation in the south although the situation has begun to improve in many areas.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 23 — Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated after heavy monsoon rains caused flooding in Thailand and Malaysia. A two-year-old boy drowned in the province of Songkhla, and some areas in southern Thailand have been declared disaster zones, reported the Thai News Agency.
